With the recent growth of TV based talent shows such as The X Factor, The Voice and Strictly Come Dancing comes a host of betting opportunities, and these are now important markets for the bookmakers and are taken very seriously.
The talent shows have markets around the individual acts winning outright, and it is here that the most value can be found, but they also have shorter odds markets available where there are less possible outcomes such as who will be the winning judge on The Voice or X Factor. Next to go markets are usually strong betting markets and usually plenty of value if you understand the voters, know the show, and know the audience, and know a bit about dancing (Strictly Come Dancing) or Talent (Britain’s Got Talent) you might be confident backing a slight outsider .
Other ‘reality’ shows, such as Big Brother (inc. Celebrity BB), and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, have well-formed betting markets around them.
BBC Sports Personality Of The Year can be a difficult market to predict and make money, usually, unless you can get on early. After winning becoming World Number 1 in late 2016, Andy Murray became the clear odds on favourite at 1/10. The next candidate was Alistair Brownlee at 8/1, followed by Laura Trott (now Kenny) and Mo Farah at 20/1. I advised my Private Clients from late August to back Nick Skelton each way at 50/1. At that time Andy Murray was the short priced favourite, but he hadn’t progressed to World Number 1. The simple reason for advising Nick Skelton won gold in the 2016 Rio Olympics in the individual category. In doing so he became the oldest British Olympic gold medallist since 1908. I backed him at 33/1 to finish second to Murray and 9/1 to finished Third (top 3). Nick Skelton finally finished 3rd some 15,000 votes behind second placed Alistair Brownlee.
